What the pre-tests are really looking for
- How thick your cornea is. Laser removes tissue. Too thin to start, and too little is left behind.
- Its shape. A map that bulges at the bottom can mean a weak cornea that will get worse after laser.
- Whether your number is stable. Two years without change is the usual bar.
- Your tear film. Dry eyes get drier for months after treatment.
When the answer should be a clear no
- A topography map suggesting keratoconus, even a mild one
- A cornea too thin for the correction you need
- A prescription still creeping up each year
- Pregnancy, or an autoimmune condition that is not settled
- Severe dry eye already troubling you

If laser is out, you still have options
An ICL is a lens placed inside the eye and suits thin corneas and high numbers. It is reversible, and it is also a bigger procedure. Good glasses and daily contact lenses remain a perfectly sensible answer.
